Widow Jane Oak and Apple Wood Aged Distilled from a Rye Mash Whiskey

To make a great whiskey, you start with the finest water available. Widow Jane Whiskey Distilled from a Rye Mash uses water from the same limestone quarries in Rosendale that were mined to create New York’s greatest architectural achievements. The sweet water is imported to Brooklyn, where Daniel Prieto Preston — inventor, aerospace engineer and founder of Cacao Prieto (a chocolate maker and distillery!) — is distilling artisan spirits at his Red Hook neighborhood distillery.

Preston crafts Widow Jane Whiskey Distilled from a Rye Mash: Oak and Applewood Aged by aging his newly-distilled rye in former bourbon barrels, with added staves made of oak and applewood. While rye is typically sweet, grassy and floral fresh off the still, the staves add complexity and richness to the spirit, which are further enhanced by the smooth, mineral-rich New York water Preston uses to bring everything to proof. As a result, the rye has notes of cinnamon, baked apples and cardamom on the nose, as well as a bold palate filled with pineapple, brown sugar, toasted coconut and marmalade. The finish is exquisite, with notes of apricot, almonds and sandalwood.

Tasting Notes
